Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has begun allotting hostel rooms to 348 newly admitted postgraduate students. The Dean of Students’ Office made these allotments. These students must move into their designated hostels by August 14 . They also need to complete all required allotment formalities by this deadline.

Hostel Allotment Process

JNU typically provides hostel accommodation to approximately 7,000 first-year students. Room availability limits simultaneous allotments. The university assigns rooms as senior students vacate them. This process occurs in phases throughout the academic year. New students receive accommodation based on their rank.

Accommodation Shortage Persists

Despite the phased allotment, about 3,000 students still await hostel rooms. Students without campus accommodation often seek private rentals. This increases living expenses. It creates difficulties for students who have relocated to JNU from other cities.

Students Await Vacant Rooms

Many students hope for hostel rooms as current occupants leave. Their chances of securing accommodation depend on their position in the university's ranking system. A JNU official stated that limited hostel space necessitates waiting for rooms to become available. The university is actively working to accommodate all students. The phased allotment will continue as more rooms open. This ensures students receive rooms according to eligibility and rank.
