Japan has opened applications for the LOTUS Program FY2026. The initiative will fund over 1,000 Indian researchers for study in Japan. This includes Master’s students, PhD scholars, and postdoctoral fellows. The program focuses on fields like Artificial Intelligence, Biotechnology, Quantum Technology, and semiconductors. Its goal is to develop global innovators.
Program Tracks and Funding
The LOTUS Program offers two tracks. The LOTUS Basic track allows research for up to 12 months. It supports early-stage joint supervision and academic networking. The LOTUS-ASPIRE track is a new, longer option. It allows residency for up to 36 months. This track aims for high-level research outcomes. It provides enhanced funding and progress reviews.
Selected candidates will receive a monthly stipend of approximately ₹1.4 lakh. This covers living expenses and accommodation. The program provides access to Japanese laboratories. It may also offer industry internships. Travel costs from India are not covered by the LOTUS Program. These costs must be handled by the researchers’ home institutions.
Eligibility and Application
Applicants must be affiliated researchers under 40 years old. Independent applications are not accepted. Applications must be submitted by a Principal Investigator at a host Japanese institution. The application deadline is June 9, 2026 . Final selections are expected by late August.
