The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi has announced important dates for the second stage of the INI SS January 2026 examination. This second stage, known as the Departmental Clinical/Practical/Lab-Based Assessment, will take place from December 9 to December 13, 2025 . This crucial assessment is for all candidates who successfully cleared the first stage (Stage I) of the INI SS exam for the January 2026 session.

The INI SS examination is a national test for doctors who wish to pursue super specialty courses in medicine. These courses include Doctor of Medicine (DM), Master of Chirurgiae (MCh), and MD in Hospital Administration. These advanced programs are offered at top medical institutions across India, known as Institutes of National Importance (INIs).

For courses offered at AIIMS, New Delhi, and PGIMER, Chandigarh, the Departmental Assessment (Stage II) will be held completely online. This means candidates will attend the assessment through video conferencing. This online method removes the need for students to travel, making the process more accessible.

Department-wise Assessment ScheduleTo be announced soon by AIIMS

While the overall window for Stage II is set, AIIMS will release a separate notice very soon. This notice will provide the exact date and time for the departmental assessment for each specific medical department. Candidates should regularly check the official AIIMS Exams website for these updates.

Understanding the Departmental Assessment (Stage II)

The Stage II Departmental Assessment is the final step in the selection process for these highly specialized medical courses. This assessment carries 20 marks and is designed to evaluate a candidate's clinical understanding, practical skills, and knowledge of lab-based procedures. It helps ensure that only the most capable and knowledgeable doctors are selected for advanced training.

AIIMS carefully selected candidates for this second stage. The number of students invited for the Departmental Assessment is based on specific criteria to ensure a fair chance. The number is the higher value between these two calculations:

  • Three times the total number of available seats at AIIMS and PGIMER combined.
  • Two times the total number of available seats across all Institutes of National Importance (INIs) combined.

This method ensures that enough qualified candidates are considered for the limited super specialty seats.

What are Super Specialty Courses?

Super specialty courses like DM and MCh are for doctors who have already completed their basic medical degree (MBBS) and their postgraduate degree (MD/MS). These courses allow doctors to specialize even further in a very specific area of medicine or surgery. For example, a doctor might specialize in cardiology (heart diseases) or neurosurgery (brain and spine surgery).

The MD Hospital Administration course, on the other hand, prepares doctors to manage hospitals and healthcare systems. These roles are very important for the smooth functioning of medical facilities.

Candidates who have qualified for Stage II should now focus on preparing for their online departmental assessment. They must ensure they have a stable internet connection and a suitable environment for the video conferencing call. Staying updated with official announcements on the AIIMS Exams website is highly recommended for all shortlisted candidates.
