India to Introduce AI and Computational Thinking from Class 3

India's schools will soon teach Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Thinking (CT) as a core skill. Starting from the academic year 2026-27 , students from Class 3 in NCERT and CBSE schools will begin learning about AI. The Ministry of Education has made this landmark decision to prepare Indian students for a technology-driven future. This new plan aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework 2023 .

This new program does not aim to train young children as computer programmers. Instead, it seeks to help students understand how technology functions. The goal is to nurture a generation that can create and guide technology, rather than merely use it. Students will learn logical thinking and problem-solving from an early age.

Learning Through Examples

A Class 3 student sorting toys to find patterns demonstrates early computational thinking. By Class 6 , the same child might use block-based coding to build a simple chatbot, also learning ethical rules for AI. In Class 9 , students could analyze real data to identify unfairness in AI recommendations. These practical, age-appropriate activities are central to the new learning framework.

Preparing for Nationwide Rollout

The CBSE has already conducted AI pilot projects since 2019 with industry partners, reaching lakhs of students and teachers . Expanding this nationwide requires significant effort. Around 10 million teachers need continuous training. Study materials must be available in 22 Indian languages . Robust digital infrastructure and internet access are also crucial for all classrooms, particularly in rural areas. Collaboration between industry and universities is essential for success.

New Ways of Teaching and Testing

Future NCERT textbooks will blend print with digital elements. Printed pages might include QR codes linking to interactive lessons and simulations. AI tutors could adjust to each child's learning pace. Project dashboards will offer instant feedback. Assessments will shift from testing memorized facts to measuring students' reasoning, problem-solving, and creativity.

AI with Ethics: A Core Lesson

A crucial aspect of this education is ethics. From the beginning, children will learn to ask vital questions: " Who might this AI program harm? " or " Whose data is not included? " This blend of curiosity, critical thinking, and conscience will give Indian talent a global advantage in the technology sector.

Ready for Future Jobs

By 2030 , 90% of jobs will require digital skills. However, these roles will also demand human qualities AI cannot replicate, such as empathy, ethical judgment, and teamwork. Early AI exposure will prepare children to be innovators and decision-makers, rather than replaceable coders. This readies them for future job market demands.

The Road Ahead

This national plan is ambitious and vital. Its success depends on steady investment in teacher training, inclusive digital infrastructure, and strong public-private partnerships. If done right, Indian classrooms will not just teach about AI. They will teachwithAI,alongsideAI, and, crucially, how to keep AI human. This will foster creative and compassionate minds ready to lead global innovation.
