Heavy rainfall is forecast for many parts of India on August 18, 2026 . The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts active monsoon conditions across northern, eastern, northeastern, and central regions. Students and parents should monitor local announcements regarding school closures.

Rainfall Warnings Issued

The IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas across Arunachal Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Sikkim on August 18.

School Closures Not Mandated Statewide

No general school holiday has been announced nationwide for August 18, 2026. Decisions on school closures are made by state governments, district administrations, or individual schools based on local conditions. Districts experiencing flooding, waterlogging, landslides, or extreme rainfall may announce temporary holidays for safety.

State-Specific Updates

Odisha

Odisha is expected to receive heavy rainfall. Mayurbhanj district is under a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall. Several other districts are at risk of flash floods, including Angul, Bargarh, Cuttack, Deogarh, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Jharsuguda, Kendrapara, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Puri, and Sambalpur.

West Bengal and Sikkim

Gangetic West Bengal and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim anticipate significant rainfall. Isolated areas could experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on August 18. Districts identified for flash flood risk include East Midnapore, Howrah, Jhargram, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and West Midnapore.

Jharkhand and Bihar

Jharkhand faces heavy to very heavy rainfall. Bihar may see heavy rainfall in isolated locations. This weather pattern is linked to a depression over coastal West Bengal moving northwestward towards Jharkhand.

Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu & Kashmir

The western Himalayan region is vulnerable. Himachal Pradesh expects heavy to very heavy rainfall and is under an orange alert for August 17 and 18. Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh may also receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Uttarakhand is forecast to have heavy rainfall. Landslides and flash floods are concerns in hilly regions.

Delhi-NCR, Haryana, and Punjab

Active monsoon conditions are expected. The IMD forecasts heavy rainfall in isolated places across Delhi-NCR, Haryana, and Punjab. Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is likely over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab. Local authorities will determine any school closures.

Uttar Pradesh

Both eastern and western Uttar Pradesh will be affected by rain. East Uttar Pradesh is forecast to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with widespread rain expected. West Uttar Pradesh may experience heavy rainfall.

Central India and Southern States

Chhattisgarh and East Madhya Pradesh anticipate heavy rainfall. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal could see isolated heavy rainfall. Parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana may experience thunderstorms and strong winds.

Recommendations for Parents and Students

Do not assume statewide school closures. Weather-related holidays are typically declared locally. Check official district administration and school notices before sending children to school, especially in areas prone to flooding or severe weather.
