IIT Madras will establish a School of Medical Sciences. The institute will offer MBBS and MD degrees. This marks a significant expansion beyond engineering programs.
Medical Education Initiative
Director V. Kamakoti announced the plan. The school aims to integrate engineering and medicine. This aligns with a national goal for healthcare technology self-reliance.
The institute plans a holistic curriculum. It will include undergraduate MBBS and postgraduate MD programs. Doctoral PhDs in medicine are also planned. Interdisciplinary BS degrees in Medical Sciences & Engineering will be offered.
Rationale and Precedent
Kamakoti stated that every technology institute should have a medical college. This fosters a self-sufficient ecosystem for medical devices and technologies. This move follows IIT Kharagpur's establishment of a medical college.
Regulatory Requirements
Establishing a medical school requires National Medical Commission (NMC) approval. This includes building an educational hospital on campus. Students will gain practical experience by treating patients.
IIT Kharagpur has already received approval for its postgraduate MD program. It also built its own hospital. IIT Madras faces a similar process. The hospital must be established first, followed by regulatory approval.
