The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) has started accepting applications for its special law and public policy courses for the 2026 academic year. Students can now apply online for programs like the LL.B. (Honours in Intellectual Property Law) , LL.M. , and the Master's in Public Policy, Law and Governance (MPPLG) . The online application period began on December 15, 2025 , and will close on February 20, 2026 .
These courses help students understand how law, technology, government rules, and public services work together. This prepares them for new challenges in law and policy.
Law Programs at IIT Kharagpur
The law courses are offered by the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law (RGSOIPL) . This school was started in 2006 . It is the only law school within the IIT system that focuses on intellectual property and technology law. It uses IIT Kharagpur's strengths in science, engineering, and new ideas.
LL.B. (Honours in Intellectual Property Law)
This is a three-year , full-time course. It is mainly for graduates who have studied engineering, technology, science, medicine, or similar fields. It helps them move into legal work, especially in intellectual property and technology law.
Eligibility for LL.B. (Honours)
- Students must have a First Class Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Technology, or Medicine, or a similar qualification.
- OR, a First Class Master's degree in Science or Pharmacy, or a similar qualification.
- OR, a First Class MBA along with any of the above degrees.
- Applicants need at least 60% marks , or a CGPA of 6.5 if a 'First Class' is not directly given.
- Students in their final year of study can also apply for this program.
Selection Process for LL.B. (Honours)
Admission will be based on an online test called a Computer-Based Test (CBT). This test will check skills in maths, science, English, logical reasoning, legal knowledge, and current affairs. There will be no negative marks for wrong answers. The test will take place in Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, and Kolkata .

LL.M. Programme: Specialisations and Eligibility
RGSOIPL also offers a two-year LL.M. programme . This course has specializations in Intellectual Property Law, Criminal Law, and International Law .
Eligibility for LL.M. Programme
- Students must have a First Class 5-year LL.B./B.L. degree from a recognised university.
- OR, a First Class 3-year LL.B./B.L. degree , along with a Bachelor's degree of at least three years.
- Students in their final year of study can also apply.
Selection Process for LL.M. Programme
Admission will be based on how well candidates perform in a Computer-Based Test . This test will be held in Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, and Kolkata .

Master's in Public Policy, Law and Governance (MPPLG) Programme
IIT Kharagpur is also accepting applications for the Master's in Public Policy, Law and Governance (MPPLG) . This is a two-year , full-time postgraduate course. It is offered by the Centre of Excellence in Public Policy, Law and Governance (CoEPPLG) .
This program trains graduates for jobs in government, policy research groups, social organisations, industries, international bodies, and teaching.
Eligibility for MPPLG Programme
- Applicants need a Bachelor's degree of at least four years in Science, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Commerce, or Arts.
- Minimum 65% marks or CGPA 7.0 for General/OBC/EWS candidates.
- Minimum 60% marks or CGPA 6.5 for SC/ST/PwD candidates.
- The upper age limit is 30 years for General/OBC/EWS candidates and 35 years for SC/ST/PwD candidates, as on January 1, 2026 .
- There is age relaxation for working professionals as per rules.
- Female candidates and those with relevant work experience will be preferred.
Selection Process for MPPLG Programme
Admissions will happen in two steps :
- An online written test (Computer-Based Test) covering English, quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, and current affairs.
- For students who pass the test, there will be a group discussion and a personal interview .
The entrance test will be held in Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, and Kolkata .

These fees are non-refundable.
Dipa Dube , Dean of RGSOIPL, IIT Kharagpur, stated that education in law and policy must change with new technology and society. She added that these programs aim to give students wide-ranging knowledge and deep thinking skills for careers in law, governance, and public policy in India and globally.
