IIT Delhi reached 118th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2027 . This matches the highest rank achieved by any Indian institution. India showed the fastest growth among G20 nations in the rankings. India now has 52 universities listed, a rise from 14 in 2017. This represents a 271% increase in a decade.
India's Expanding Global Presence
India is now the fifth most represented higher education system globally in the QS Rankings. Progress extends beyond the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). A total of 43 non-IIT institutions are now ranked. This compares to 7 non-IITs in 2017. Eighteen Indian institutions achieved their highest-ever rank. Thirteen of these are non-IITs.
Two Indian institutions entered the rankings for the first time. Universities from 19 states and union territories are now represented. This is up from 9 a decade ago. India also performed strongly in research and employability metrics.
Research and Employability Gains
The country has 11 universities in the world's top 100 for Citations per Faculty. Six universities rank in the top 100 for Employer Reputation. India holds the third-largest global research output. Over half, 52%, of Indian universities improved their rank this year.
Key Performance Indicators
The University of Mumbai jumped 70 places. It now ranks 25th globally for employment outcomes. More than one-third of Indian universities improved their employer reputation scores. Every university in India's top 10 saw better employer reputation scores.
Top-performing Indian institutions come from various categories. This includes premier engineering campuses. Areas for improvement include international faculty recruitment and international student enrollment. Global academic reputation also remains an area for growth. The QS 2027 rankings highlight India's significant rise in global higher education.
