Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on August 8 that the government is arranging up to ₹1 lakh crore in funding for the research sector. He made the announcement at the 57th Convocation Ceremony of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi.
Modi addressed graduating students at the event. He emphasized that their decisions over the next 30-35 years will shape India’s path to becoming a ‘Viksit Bharat’, or developed nation. He encouraged graduates to consider national needs when making career choices.
Research Funding and Initiatives
The Prime Minister highlighted several government programs supporting research and innovation. These include the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship, which offers opportunities to talented youth. He also mentioned the Research, Development and Innovation Scheme and the National Research Foundation.
Modi stated that a significant opportunity exists in the field of research. He reiterated that funding up to ₹1 lakh crore is being made available for this sector. The ‘One Nation One Subscription’ initiative was also cited. This program grants access to global research journals nationwide, even in smaller towns.
Graduates’ Role in National Development
Modi urged students to think about how their work can address the country's needs. He noted that each generation faces unique challenges and has a national responsibility. The graduates' contributions over the coming decades will be crucial for India's development journey.
IIT Delhi Convocation Highlights
Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi also spoke at the convocation. He congratulated the graduating class, their families, and IIT Delhi faculty. Joshi reported that India's higher education sector has grown significantly.
According to Joshi, over 4.5 crore students are currently enrolled in higher education. Since 2014, the number of universities has increased by nearly 70%. This includes over 650 new universities and 14,000 new colleges. The period also saw the establishment of nine new IIMs and seven new IITs.
During the ceremony, Prime Minister Modi presented IIT Delhi's highest awards to outstanding graduating students. These included the President’s Gold Medal and Director’s Gold Medal.
