IIT Delhi has launched the ALIGN initiative, a new program allowing top students from 18 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) to pursue MTech, MS (Research), and PhD degrees directly without the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) exam. This program, formalized through Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the NITs, aims to create a unified higher education system.
The ALIGN initiative, standing for Accelerating Learning and Innovation Growth Network, offers an Early Admission Scheme. This scheme targets academically strong undergraduate and postgraduate students from participating NITs. Admission is based on high academic performance and a research record, typically requiring a CGPA of 8.0 or above.
ALIGN Program Details
The ALIGN program extends beyond just waiving the GATE requirement. It includes five structured pathways designed to integrate students into IIT Delhi's research environment.
Five Pathways Under ALIGN
| Pathway | Operational Details |
| Early Admission | Direct entry to MTech, MS (R), and PhD programs without a GATE score. |
| Credit Flexibility & Advanced Standing | Mutual recognition of earned credits to potentially shorten degree completion times. |
| Final-Year Student Exchange | Selected final-year BTech students can study at IIT Delhi for their last year. They gain access to advanced courses and IIT faculty. |
| Research Immersion | Masters and doctoral students from NITs can use IIT Delhi's laboratories and research equipment. |
| Predoctoral Fellowships | Financial and academic support for students exploring research before committing to a full PhD. |
The Early Admission Scheme is a key component of ALIGN. It is designed to keep top engineering talent within India's premier research institutions. This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Selected students for the final-year exchange program will spend their last year at IIT Delhi. They will utilize the institute's advanced laboratory facilities. They will also enroll in specialized courses offered at IIT Delhi. This provides hands-on research experience.
The Research Immersion pathway grants students access to IIT Delhi's state-of-the-art labs. This allows them to work with advanced instrumentation. The Predoctoral Fellowships offer support for students considering doctoral research. This program provides a financial and academic bridge.
