Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) will open its first international campus in the United States. The new campus is a partnership with the State University of New York (SUNY) at Old Westbury. It will be located on Long Island, New York.
New Campus Plans
The campus will offer new educational and research opportunities. IIT Bombay will develop the engineering program for SUNY Old Westbury. Certificate courses will start in 2027 . Later, full degree programs will be introduced. These will be open to students globally. This includes students from India and the United States. Areas of study will include science, engineering, physics, and artificial intelligence.
Partnership Details
A letter of intent was signed. IIT Bombay Director Prof. Shireesh Kedare and SUNY Old Westbury President Dr. Timothy E. Sams signed the document. The Consul General Binaya S. Pradhan attended the signing.
Academic Collaboration
Before degree programs launch, early academic cooperation will begin. This includes faculty and researcher exchanges. Both institutions will work on joint research projects. They will also organize conferences and academic events.
Government Support
The Indian government provided support for the partnership. Officials thanked the Indian Embassy and Consulate General in New York. This support was crucial for the collaboration.

Ambassador Vinay Kwarta called the partnership important. It strengthens academic and technology ties between India and the U.S. Higher Education Secretary Dr. Vineet Joshi stated it is a milestone. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the initiative aligns with NEP 2020. He believes it will expand Indian education's global reach. It will also build stronger connections with international universities.
