Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the first Master of Business Administration (MBA) program batch at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati on [Insert Date of Inauguration]. The program, set to run from 2026 to 2028, welcomed 52 students from 18 Indian states.
IIM Guwahati Program Launch
The new MBA program aims to enhance higher education opportunities in Assam and the Northeast region. The campus is located in Bongora, Kamrup district.
This academic session marks a fulfillment for students from Assam and the Northeast, according to Chief Minister Sarma. He congratulated the inaugural batch of 52 students.
Government Support and Expansion
Chief Minister Sarma expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for their support. The state government requested the establishment of the institute in 2022.
Principal approval was granted in April 2024. The Union Cabinet gave final approval in August 2025.
The number of IIMs has grown from 13 in 2014 to 22 currently. This expansion increases access to management education nationwide.
The government invested INR 39 crore to develop the IIM Guwahati campus. This investment ensures academic activities proceed without delay.
Assam as a Higher Education Hub
With IIM Guwahati, Assam strengthens its position as a center for higher learning. The state already hosts IIT Guwahati, AIIMS Guwahati, IIIT, and NIPER. The National Forensic Sciences University is also upcoming.
Chief Minister Sarma hopes students from Assam will fill at least 50 percent of seats in national institutions located within the state.
