All 20 student members of the IIM Bangalore Placement Committee have resigned. This happened just before the important placement season for students. The resignations followed a decision by the institute to withdraw a special policy. This policy previously gave some senior student representatives extra chances to apply for jobs.

Why Students Resigned

The committee members stepped down because IIM Bangalore cancelled a rule. This rule allowed student representatives on the placement committee to apply for more jobs than other students. Other students at the institute felt this rule was unfair. They believed it gave an unequal advantage to a few students. The institute removed the rule after these complaints. This decision then led to the resignation of all 20 committee members. News reports, including one by ToI , confirmed this.

How Placements Might Be Affected

These resignations come at a very crucial time for the institute. IIM Bangalore is about to start its pre-placement process . After this, the final placements will happen in early February . The student placement committee plays a key role in these activities. Its members connect with companies that come to recruit students. They also set up interview schedules and handle all the small details related to placements. Without a full committee, these important tasks could face problems. This might make the placement process slower or less smooth for students looking for jobs.

What IIM Bangalore Is Doing Now

IIM Bangalore's management is now working to manage the situation. The Career Development Services (CDS) team, which includes both faculty and staff, is taking over. They are reviewing how to run the upcoming placement processes. The goal is to make sure placements are not disturbed. The institute is holding internal discussions. They want to find a new way to manage placements and form a new committee. As of now, the institute has not announced who will replace the resigned committee members. However, they are trying to ensure that the schedule for placements stays on track.

Understanding the Placement Process

For those unfamiliar, the placement process is a critical part of management education. It helps students get jobs after they complete their courses.

What is a Placement Committee?

  • A placement committee is usually made up of students.
  • These students work with the institute's staff.
  • Their main job is to act as a bridge between students and companies.
  • They help bring companies to campus for recruitment drives.
  • They also help students prepare for interviews.

Stages of Placements

The placement season typically has two main stages:

  • Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs): Some students get job offers even before the main placement season begins. This happens after they complete internships with companies.
  • Final Placements: This is when most students interview with various companies and receive job offers. It is a very busy period for students and the institute.

The smooth running of these stages needs careful planning and effort.

Why the Policy Was Controversial

The policy that was withdrawn gave some students an unfair edge. It allowed student representatives on the placement committee to apply for more jobs. For example, if other students could apply to 5 companies, these representatives might have been allowed to apply to 7 or 8. This extra chance could mean a better job offer for them. Other students felt this was not fair. They argued that everyone should have the same number of chances to apply. This kind of unequal rule can cause tension among students. By removing the policy, IIM Bangalore aimed to create a fair playing field for all its students. This shows the institute listened to student feedback regarding equality.
