The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) plans to update its curriculum to include artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics. These changes aim to equip future chartered accountants with skills for a changing profession. The updated syllabus is expected to be implemented around 2028 .
Curriculum Review Underway
ICAI has formed a Committee for Review of Education and Training (CRET). This committee is examining the current CA syllabus and training structure. It will also assess the examination system and soft skills development.
CRET is expected to finalize its recommendations by December . Following this, ICAI will open the proposals for public feedback.
New Skills for Future Accountants
ICAI President Prasanna Kumar D stated that technology is central to accounting jobs. Subjects like AI, data analysis, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), and sustainability are not currently formal parts of the curriculum. ICAI believes these skills are necessary for future relevance.
The proposed changes signal a move from traditional accounting and auditing focus. Companies increasingly use automation and digital systems. Non-financial reporting is also growing.
The review committee will also look at articleship training and communication skills. The assessment system is also under review. Future students may see changes in subjects and training delivery.
Industry Demands Drive Changes
The accountancy sector shows increasing demand for professionals skilled in forensic auditing. Knowledge of ESG disclosures and digital financial systems is also sought after.
This curriculum review aims to align student preparation with these evolving industry requirements. It builds upon the New Scheme of Education and Training introduced in 2023.
