Several Indian states are adjusting school schedules due to a severe heatwave. Odisha will reopen schools on June 18 after summer break, while Patna, Noida, and Ghaziabad have extended closures or altered class timings to protect students.
Heatwave Disrupts School Operations
In Patna, Bihar, all government and private schools up to Class 5 are suspended until June 20. This decision aims to safeguard young students from high temperatures. Classes for students in Grades 6 to 8 will proceed with strict precautions. Academic activities for these older students must conclude by 10:30 am. These revised timings are in effect from June 15 to June 20.
Bihar was already observing summer vacation from June 1 to June 20. The extended closures highlight the severity of the ongoing heatwave.
Odisha Reopens Schools Amid Monsoon Relief
Odisha is set to resume classes on June 18. The state's summer vacation, which began April 27, will conclude as scheduled. School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond confirmed the reopening. Monsoon conditions have brought some temperature relief to Odisha. Authorities will monitor the weather and may review the decision if temperatures rise again.
Uttar Pradesh Districts Extend Closures
In Uttar Pradesh, districts like Noida and Ghaziabad are maintaining school closures for younger students. Schools in Noida from nursery to Class 8 remain shut indefinitely.
