The government detailed a multi-faceted strategy in Lok Sabha to address student mental health concerns. Minister of State for Education, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, outlined initiatives aimed at student well-being. These measures include national support services, enhanced campus facilities, and new regulations for coaching centers.

Root Causes of Student Distress

National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reports identified key factors contributing to student suicides. These include examination failures and academic pressure. Family problems, illness, and personal relationship issues were also cited as significant causes.

National Support Systems

The MANODARPAN initiative provides national toll-free psychological services. It offers counseling and interactive programs like 'Sahyog' and 'Paricharcha' to students nationwide.

Strengthening Campus Mental Health

Leading central educational institutions are enhancing mental health support. IITs, IIMs, and NITs are establishing campus counseling centers. These centers will have full-time or visiting clinical psychologists and psychiatrists.

Coaching Center Regulations

New guidelines aim to reduce stress from coaching centers. Mandatory counseling facilities are required. Batch segregation based on academic performance is prohibited. Fee structures must be transparent to avoid student pressure.

Teacher Training for Early Detection

Over 4,000 teachers received training under the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Program. This program equips educators to identify emotional problems in students early.

Policy Interventions

The Ministry of Education's MANODARPAN platform offers continuous mental support. It serves students, teachers, and parents. A national helpline is available. Interactive sessions are broadcast via PM e-Vidya channels and NCERT media outlets.

Higher Education Institution Guidelines

The University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Ministry issued directives to higher educational institutions. These include implementing distress signal identification systems. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for suicide prevention are mandated. Student support systems and grievance redressal mechanisms must be developed. Promoting physical and emotional fitness among students is also a focus.
