IIT Guwahati has released the admit cards for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026. Students can now download their admit cards from the official GOAPS portal at gate2026.iitg.ac.in using their enrollment ID and password. However, after the release, many students have expressed concerns about their assigned exam centers being far from their homes.
Soon after the admit cards were made available, several students used online platforms to share their worries. They reported that their allocated exam centers are located far, sometimes 70 to 150 kilometers , from the cities they had chosen during the application process. This issue is particularly challenging for students from smaller cities (Tier 2 and Tier 3) and those who have morning shifts, forcing them to travel long distances.
Students said that long travel hours could cause stress and affect their performance during the exam. They also highlighted problems related to finding accommodation and good transport connectivity near these distant centers.
No Changes Allowed for Exam Centres
It is important for all candidates to know that exam centers cannot be changed after the GATE 2026 admit card has been released. The exam conducting authority does not allow any requests for changing the allocated test center.
GATE 2026 Exam Schedule
The GATE 2026 examinations will be conducted by IIT Guwahati on four different days in February. The exams will take place on February 7, 8, 14, and 15 . There will be two shifts each day:
| Shift | Time |
| Forenoon (Morning) | 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM |
| Afternoon | 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM |
Tips for Managing Travel and Accommodation
Given the issue of distant centers, students are advised to plan their travel and accommodation early. This can help reduce stress on exam day.
- Plan Ahead: Book your travel tickets as soon as possible.
- Check Address: Carefully check your exam center's full address.
- Find Accommodation: Look for a place to stay close to your exam center. Check if food and other facilities are available nearby.
- Reach Early: Aim to reach the exam center at least 2 to 3 hours before the exam starts. This allows time for verification and avoids last-minute rush.
- Comfortable Clothes: Wear comfortable clothing on exam day.
Documents Required on Exam Day
Candidates must carry the following documents to the GATE 2026 exam center:
- GATE 2026 Admit Card: A clear printout. Keep at least two to three copies in case one gets damaged during travel. Do not laminate the admit card.
- Valid ID Proof: An original, valid photo ID proof. This must be the same ID you provided during the GATE application process. If the photo on your ID is unclear, carry an alternative valid ID proof as backup.
- Pen and Pencil: Carry a clear and new pen and pencil for any rough work.
- Transparent Water Bottle:
- Medications: If you need any specific medications.
- Assistive Devices: Scribe applicants can bring their necessary assistive devices to the center.
Following these guidelines will help ensure a smoother experience on your GATE 2026 exam day.
