About the GATE Exam

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a major national-level exam in India. It is conducted annually by different IITs and IISc. GATE helps students get into MTech, M.Arch, ME, and PhD programs at top institutions like IITs, NITs, and IIITs. Many public sector companies (PSUs) such as BHEL, IOCL, and NTPC also use GATE scores for jobs. A GATE score is valid for 3 years, and there is no limit on how many times a student can take the exam.

Important Changes for GATE 2026

IIT Guwahati has made a few changes for GATE 2026:

  • The application fees for GATE 2026 have been changed.
  • A new paper, Energy Science (code XE-I), has been added under the Engineering Sciences section.

The GATE exam is a 3-hour computer-based test. Questions are of three types: Multiple Choice (MCQ), Multiple Select (MSQ), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT). The General Aptitude (GA) section is common for all papers and is worth 15 marks. This section covers verbal, quantitative, analytical, and spatial aptitude.

Remember, if you registered for two papers, you will receive only one admit card showing both exam details. Also, once your exam centre is allotted and the admit card is released, you cannot change your GATE exam city.
