The University of Delhi (DU) Registrar Vikas Gupta has clarified that admissions based on Class 12 marks are a separate process. This route is exclusively for filling vacant seats in specific programs and colleges. It does not impact students admitted through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET).
Students who applied via CUET have already received college and course allocations. These allocations are based on their CUET scores and submitted preferences. Gupta stated that the Class 12-based admission option is not a substitute for the CUET admission system.
CUET Admissions Explained
The regular DU admission process prioritizes student choices. Candidates select preferred colleges and courses from approximately 1,500 options. Admissions are then determined by CUET performance and these preferences. The highest CUET scores secure preferred college placements.
Gupta explained, "When admission happens via CUET, we prioritise the student’s choice; they select their preferred college and course from a pool of around 1,500 options." He added, "We prioritise the highest marks obtained in the exam. They receive their preferred college based on that ranking."
Class 12-Based Admissions for Vacant Seats
DU introduced the Class 12-based admission route to fill undergraduate seats remaining vacant after the CUET process. This applies only to designated colleges and programs with available spots.
The university has largely completed its main admission cycle. DU had approximately 71,000 seats available. Over 70,500 admissions have already been finalized. Gupta noted, "We had around 71,000 seats, and approximately 70,500 admissions have already been completed."
He further elaborated, "The fact is, we have occasionally made excess allocations within colleges to ensure the academic session starts on time. Additionally, we have various supernumerary quotas—such as the CW (Armed Forces) quota, ECA, and sports categories." Taking these factors into account, 70,512 admissions were confirmed against a capacity of 71,439 seats.
Colleges Offering Class 12-Based Admissions
Eleven DU colleges are offering admissions on the basis of Class 12 marks for specific programs. These colleges include:
- Kalindi College
- Zakir Husain Delhi College (Evening)
- Lakshmibai College
- Rajdh College
- Shyama Prasad Mukherji College for Women
- P.G.D.A.V. (Evening)

Admissions through this route are subject to the eligibility criteria for each course and seat availability.
No Switching for CUET-Admitted Students
Students who have already secured admission through CUET cannot use the Class 12-based route to change their college or course. The university explicitly stated, "No candidate who has an admission in any college of the University shall be eligible to take admission on the basis of merit of Class XII marks."
The registrar confirmed, "As for the students admitted based on Class 12 marks, every student who applied via CUET has already received their preferred college and course based on merit; the Class 12-based admissions are a separate matter."
Next Steps for Applicants
Interested students should verify if their desired course and college are part of the Class 12-based admission scheme. They must also check individual college websites for specific eligibility requirements, vacant seat numbers, and application procedures.
The DU admission portal lists Class 12 marks-based UG admissions separately from the regular Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS). Updates on this admission route for the 2026-27 academic session are available on the portal.
