Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma heard the case, namedNysa Bedi vs Government of Delhi. Advocate Harshita Nathrani represented the Delhi government. She informed the court about a new circular from the Department of Education. This circular stated the Delhi State School Games will conclude in October 2026. This move addresses the students' primary concern. The court accepted the revised schedule. It then decided to close the petition.
Students' Concerns Addressed
Senior Advocate Shyel Trehan represented the schoolchildren. He welcomed the Delhi government's decision. Trehan stated the children's main goal was achieved. The court officially closed the petition based on this development.
Reason for Legal Action
A group of minor students filed the petition through their parents. They argued that outdoor sports events occurred during winter. Delhi's air quality becomes hazardous during this period. Students were forced to undertake strenuous physical activity in toxic air. This posed serious health risks. Petitioners cited violations of their rights under Articles 21 and 21A of the Constitution.
Previously, the government stated it could not change the annual sports calendar. The students' legal team opposed this. They argued that children playing outdoors in polluted air harmed their lungs. Advocates Manjira Dasgupta, Bhargav Ravindran Thali, Rohan Poddar, Mayank Kahitan, and Vidhi Jain also appeared for the petitioners.
