The registration process for CLAT 2026 counselling has officially closed. Students who qualified in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2026 needed to register by December 27, 2025. Those who missed this deadline will not be able to take part in the seat allotment process for admissions to National Law Universities (NLUs) across India. The next important step for registered students is the release of the First Allotment List, which is scheduled for January 7, 2026.
What is CLAT Counselling?
CLAT counselling is a crucial step for students aiming to study law at the National Law Universities. It is the process through which seats are given out to eligible candidates based on their CLAT scores and their preferences for different NLUs and courses. This process ensures that students get into their preferred law colleges in a fair manner. The entire counselling process is conducted online, meaning students can participate from anywhere without needing to visit a physical centre.
The CLAT counselling process involves a few key stages: first, students register and pay a counselling fee. After this, based on their exam rank and choices, seats are offered in various rounds. Students then need to make a decision about the seat offered to them, which leads to final admission.

Understanding Your Seat Allotment Options
After a seat is offered in an allotment list, registered candidates have three main options: Freeze, Float, or Exit. Understanding these options is very important for students.
Freeze Option
If you choose the 'Freeze' option, it means you are happy with the seat you have been offered in the current round. You want to accept this seat and secure your admission in that specific NLU. Once you freeze your seat, you will not be considered for any other college or course in later counselling rounds. You must then pay the confirmation fee and complete the admission formalities at the allotted NLU within the given dates.
Float Option
The 'Float' option is for students who have been offered a seat but wish to try for a better preferred NLU or course in the next counselling rounds. By choosing 'Float', you accept the currently offered seat but also show interest in upgrading to a higher preference if a seat becomes available. If you get a better seat in a future round, your previous seat will be automatically given to another candidate. If you do not get an upgrade, your current seat will remain yours. You still need to pay the confirmation fee to keep your current seat while floating.
Exit Option
The 'Exit' option means you are withdrawing from the CLAT counselling process completely. If you choose this, you are rejecting the seat offered to you and will not be considered for any future allotment rounds. You will also lose any counselling fees paid. This option is generally chosen by students who have secured admission elsewhere or no longer wish to pursue law through CLAT.
