Bengaluru's Clarence High School has moved to online classes for students in Grades 6 through 12. This decision comes after over 500 students and 21 staff members reported falling sick. The school confirmed two cases of H1N1 influenza.
School Shifts to Online Learning Amid Outbreak
Clarence High School suspended all offline classes on August 12 for sanitization. The situation worsened upon reopening on August 13. Over 500 students, approximately 20% of the student body, were absent due to illness. Another 137 students reported to the first-aid center.
Symptoms reported include high fever, severe cough, cold, and body aches. The school management officially extended the suspension of physical classes until August 18 . Students in Grades 6 to 12 are now attending classes online. Primary and Montessori classes are temporarily closed.
Concerns Raised Over Sanitation
School administrators have contacted local authorities about sanitation issues. Letters were sent to the Block Education Officer and the BBMP City Corporation Health Officer. The school cited health hazards caused by unlicensed street food vendors operating near the school premises.
Management claims waste from these vendors attracts pests. This is a contributing factor to the current health concerns within the school environment.
