Chhattisgarh government schools now require students to chant mantras during daily assemblies, before meals, and at the end of the school day. The state government implemented this new rule at the start of the current academic session.

Mandatory Mantra Chanting Sparks Debate

The decision has ignited a political dispute. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) states the measure promotes discipline and cultural values. The opposition Congress party questions its alignment with secular education principles.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai defended the initiative. He said mantra chanting builds character, discipline, patriotism, and strengthens moral values. The government insists it aims to promote Indian traditions, not religious indoctrination.

The Congress party strongly criticized the move. They allege the BJP government is imposing its ideology in state-run schools. Opposition leaders argue that including religious mantras requires adding teachings from other faiths to maintain secularism.

Tribal leaders and social organizations have also voiced concerns. They question cultural inclusivity and the compulsory nature of the practice for diverse student populations.

Officials Defend New Routine

School education officials support the initiative. They claim daily recitations improve student concentration, discipline, and moral development. Some school administrators report positive student and teacher responses.

The controversy is expected to continue. Debates surrounding education policy, cultural values, and secularism remain active in the state.
