Parents and students are raising concerns over the CBSE On-Screen Marking (OSM) system. The Delhi Parents Association reports widespread disappointment with the system's implementation this year. This follows results that have caused stress for students aiming for competitive exams like NEET and JEE.
OSM System Shortcomings Cited
Aparajitna Gautam, a representative of the Delhi Parents Association, shared these concerns. She stated that students prepare for years for their future. The OSM system's perceived flaws have led to many students not achieving expected marks. This outcome is causing significant stress for students and their families.
Students question the sudden introduction of the new system. They cite a lack of prior testing. Social media platforms show numerous student complaints. The Facebook page for CBSE displays a large volume of objections.
Volume of Objections and Accessibility Issues
Reports indicate 6.5 lakh students have formally objected. The actual number is believed to be higher. Out of 18 lakh total students, nearly 12 lakh attend government schools. Many of these students are from rural areas.
Gautam highlighted accessibility challenges. She noted that if metro city students face laptop issues, rural students with limited access face greater difficulties. The board is accused of rushing training. Follow-ups were reportedly insufficient.
Training and Evaluation Process Criticized
Teachers were tasked with logging in and practicing with sample papers. However, there was no verification. This check would confirm if teachers completed the training. Such a process could ensure proper understanding of OSM.
Another issue involves the evaluators. Papers were intended for evaluation by PGT teachers. Due to teacher shortages, TGT teachers also participated. TGT teachers typically instruct up to Class 10. Gautam suggests they may not fully grasp the marking scheme for higher classes. This could contribute to lower student scores.
