The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has updated the documentation issued to students following the Class 12 board examinations, impacting future academic and career pursuits. Starting with the 2025 results, the board will no longer issue physical migration certificates, with digital copies now considered official.
Mandatory Documents for Higher Education
The CBSE Class 12 results are accompanied by official documents essential for higher education admissions in India and abroad. These certificates serve as proof of educational qualification and are legally recognized.
Key Documents Issued
Students receive two primary documents from CBSE: a mark sheet and a passing certificate. Schools may also provide a character certificate and a provisional certificate.
1. CBSE Class 12 Mark Sheet
The mark sheet details the marks obtained in both practical and theory components for each subject. It includes grades but does not display the overall CGPA or percentage.
Both physical and digital versions are issued. The physical mark sheet is sent to schools after result declaration. The digital mark sheet is available immediately via DigiLocker, accessible with credentials provided to schools.
2. Passing Certificate (AISSCE)
The All India Secondary School Certificate Examination (AISSCE) is the official passing certificate. This document confirms a student's successful completion of Class 12. It is required for university admissions and government job applications. Marks are not listed on this certificate.
Similar to the mark sheet, physical and digital copies are provided. Universities often require printed certificates for admissions and other legal purposes, such as passport applications. Students should collect physical copies from their schools.
3. Migration Certificate Update
As of the 2025 results , CBSE has discontinued the issuance of physical migration certificates. Students moving between states or from central boards to state universities will receive a digital migration certificate in their DigiLocker account.
This digital certificate is confirmed as acceptable for admission purposes. However, if an institution specifically requires a physical copy, students can request one through the CBSE online portal. This request incurs a fee, which was set at Rs. 500 in 2025.
Digital Documents and University Acceptance
The University Grants Commission (UGC) mandates that universities and colleges must accept digital mark sheets and passing certificates. Students can obtain an official stamp on their downloaded digital mark sheet from their school principal for university admissions.
Provisional mark sheets and certificates have been discontinued by most schools, as actual digital documents are available immediately after result declaration. Students are advised to secure their digital documents promptly.
