Understanding CBSE Grading
CBSE employs a relative grading system for Class 10 and 12 exams. Grades are assigned based on a student's performance relative to other students in the same subject. This differs from absolute grading, which uses fixed mark ranges.
All students who pass a subject are ranked. This rank order is divided into eight equal groups. Each group receives a specific grade:
| Grade | Criteria |
| A-1 | Top 1/8th of passed candidates |
| A-2 | Next 1/8th of passed candidates |
| B-1 | Next 1/8th of passed candidates |
| B-2 | Next 1/8th of passed candidates |
| C-1 | Next 1/8th of passed candidates |
| C-2 | Next 1/8th of passed candidates |
| D-1 | Next 1/8th of passed candidates |
| D-2 | Next 1/8th of passed candidates |
| E | Essential Repeat |
CGPA to Percentage Conversion
CBSE marksheets display the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), not the passing percentage. To calculate the equivalent percentage, multiply the CGPA by 9.5.
The formula is: Percentage = CGPA x 9.5
Passing Criteria
To pass the CBSE Class 10 board exams, students need a minimum of 33% in both theory and practical components for each subject. An overall Grade D1 or higher is required in all subjects. Scores below 33% in any subject will result in a failure classification.
