The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is introducing Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) learning materials for students in Classes 3 through 8. This initiative aims to boost skill-based education. The update was announced via Circular No. Acad-18/2026 on April 9, 2026.
New Resources Integrated with Math
The new materials include student handbooks and teacher guides. These resources will supplement existing classroom learning. They are designed for integration with the current Mathematics curriculum. This approach avoids adding new subjects.
CBSE stated that CT and AI concepts will be taught alongside math lessons. Students will develop logical reasoning and problem-solving skills. The goal is to introduce modern technology concepts without increasing academic workload. Concepts like pattern recognition and data handling will be taught through familiar math topics.
Focus on Application and Critical Thinking
The initiative shifts focus from memorization to application-based learning. Students will explore real-life problems. They will use different methods to find solutions. Classroom discussions will be encouraged.
CBSE emphasizes the thinking process over just correct answers. This supports competency-based education. It aims to develop critical thinking skills among students.
Changes for Higher Classes
CBSE is also modifying its approach for secondary classes. The existing Artificial Intelligence subject for Class 9 will end in the 2026-27 academic year. Students currently in Class 10 for the 2025-26 session will continue under the old system.
For Classes 9 to 12, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will provide CT and AI modules. These modules will be used for internal assessments and interdisciplinary projects.
Teacher Guidance and Implementation
Teachers are advised to use flexible teaching methods. These methods should promote discussion and analysis. The resource books contain activities and case studies. They are designed to make classrooms interactive.
The materials aim to build conceptual understanding and curiosity. They are not solely focused on exam results. Schools affiliated with CBSE can access the materials on the official academic website. Implementation begins with the 2026-27 academic session .
CBSE describes this as preparation for a digital world. Essential skills include problem-solving and technological awareness.
