School closures are under consideration across several Indian states on August 21, 2026 , due to continued heavy monsoon rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy showers in northern, central, and eastern regions. These conditions pose risks of flooding, waterlogging, and landslides. Decisions on school holidays are made by state governments, district administrations, or individual schools based on local safety assessments.

State-Wise Updates on Rainfall and School Holidays

Himachal Pradesh and union territories Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are experiencing significant rainfall. The IMD warns of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning in these areas on August 21. Landslides are a concern in Himachal Pradesh, and road connectivity could be impacted in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Local authorities will issue closure orders if necessary.

Parts of Uttar Pradesh anticipate heavy rainfall on August 21, particularly West Uttar Pradesh. East Uttar Pradesh has no heavy rain warning for this date. School holiday decisions in Uttar Pradesh will depend on district-level conditions.

Madhya Pradesh faces heavy rain warnings for August 21. East Madhya Pradesh is under a very heavy rainfall alert. West Madhya Pradesh expects heavy rain with thunderstorms and lightning.

Odisha and the West Bengal and Sikkim region have heavy rain and thunderstorm warnings for August 21. This forecast extends to August 22 for West Bengal and Sikkim. Odisha has already seen school holidays in some districts due to past flooding.

Bihar is experiencing active monsoon conditions with IMD rainfall and thunderstorm warnings. Weather patterns vary by district, making local decisions on school holidays probable.

Uttarakhand is monitoring monsoon-related risks, especially in hilly and landslide-prone zones. While a more intense rain spell is expected in coming days, local authorities may decide on closures based on current district conditions.

Kerala and parts of Karnataka are also under active monsoon conditions. Coastal areas in Kerala face weather concerns. A rain alert alone does not guarantee school closures. Students should check local administration or school announcements.

Confirmed Holiday in Puducherry

A confirmed school holiday has been declared in Puducherry. August 21 and 22 will see 69 government and private schools closed. These institutions are designated examination centers for the SSC CGL examination. The Education Department made the announcement to facilitate exam arrangements.

Nationwide Status

Currently, there is no nationwide school holiday announced for August 21, 2026, specifically due to rain. School closures are localized. States and regions requiring close monitoring for rainfall activity include Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Kerala, and Karnataka. Other potentially affected areas include Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and the Northeast.
