Government schools in Assam have lost nearly 735,000 students over the past nine years. During the same period, private schools gained over 940,000 students. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu shared these figures in the state assembly. This data shows a clear shift in enrollment preferences across Assam.
Enrollment Drop in Government Schools
Data from the 2016-2017 academic session to the projected 2025-2026 session reveals a steep decline in government and provincialized schools. Enrollment dropped by 735,446 students, covering pre-primary to Class 12. Conversely, private schools saw enrollment increase by 940,566 students in the same timeframe.
Shrinking Government School Infrastructure
The number of government schools in Assam has decreased by 8,591 over the last nine years. Government schools also lost 15,326 teachers. In contrast, private schools added 51,214 teachers. This indicates an expansion of private institutions and a reduction in the public school sector.
Teacher Shortages and Facility Gaps
Many government schools operate with minimal staff. Currently, 3,033 schools have only one teacher. Another 15,270 schools have two teachers, and 8,115 schools have three teachers.
Infrastructure Deficiencies
Significant gaps in basic facilities persist. A total of 676 schools lack electricity. Around 730 schools do not have internet access. Furthermore, 12,353 schools struggle with weak infrastructure and limited staffing.
These statistics highlight ongoing challenges within Assam's public school system. The data was presented during the current assembly session, drawing attention to the state of public education.
