Previously, the holiday was scheduled for Thursday, June 25, 2026. The new date aligns with the expected observance of Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, on June 26, 2026, according to the lunar calendar.
The Andhra Pradesh State Waqf Board proposed the change. They indicated that the 9th of Muharram is anticipated on June 25, 2026, with the 10th Muharram on June 26, 2026.
The government initially declared holidays for 2026 in December 2025. These dates were updated following the revised festival schedule.
