Health Officials Warn of Heatwave Preparedness
Separately, the Union Health Secretary has directed all states and Union Territories to prepare for increased heat-related illnesses. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts more heatwave days than usual from April to June 2026.
Regions expected to experience severe heat include East India, Central India, North-West India, and the South-East Peninsula. Coastal areas in Odisha, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh are also at risk.
The Health Secretary's directive includes specific actions for health facilities. States must establish dedicated Heat Stroke Management Units. Ambulance services need to be adequately prepared. Early warning systems should be activated for timely public alerts. Heat stroke cases must be reported in real-time on the Ministry's IHIP portal.
Recent IMD reports indicated temperatures ranging from 40 to 46 degrees Celsius across much of the country. Cooler temperatures, below 36 degrees Celsius, were noted in the western Himalayas and parts of North-East India.
