Afghanistan’s Ministry of Higher Education has suspended nine private universities. The ministry cited widespread administrative and academic violations. Seven institutions faced a one-year license suspension. Two others had their licenses permanently revoked. These actions follow recent government inspections.

University Suspensions Detailed

The seven universities with one-year suspensions are: Barlas University, Rah-e Saadat, Turkistan, Azhar, Barna, Rashad, and Payam University. Their licenses are on hold. The ministry did not specify the names of the two universities whose licenses were permanently canceled. The suspensions highlight significant issues within the country's private higher education sector.

Violations Found

Inspections revealed multiple serious problems. A primary concern was the existence of 'ghost students.' These were students listed on enrollment but who did not attend classes. Poor attendance records were also noted across institutions. Classrooms were frequently empty during scheduled lesson times. There was also a reported lack of qualified staff to manage university operations.

Medical Education Deficiencies

Medical training programs faced specific criticism. Inspections found a lack of essential laboratory equipment. Universities were not following official study plans. Medical students received insufficient hands-on experience. Opportunities for practical training in hospitals were limited.

Broader Educational Context

The empty classrooms issue underscores broader problems. These issues persist in Afghanistan's education system since 2021 . Strict regulations have significantly impacted women's access to education. The university suspensions are a direct response to these reported academic and administrative failures.
