Seven medical colleges in India have been flagged for failing to pay stipends to interns and residents. The National Medical Commission (NMC) informed the Supreme Court on August 16, 2024 , of this finding. These colleges are among 756 institutions nationwide.

Stipend Non-Compliance Identified

The NMC stated that show-cause notices have been issued to the seven colleges. Further action will be taken after the colleges submit their responses. This update came during a Supreme Court hearing concerning stipend payments for medical students and residents.

Campus Stipend Payment Status

Across India, 573 undergraduate medical colleges are reportedly meeting stipend payment obligations. The NMC also noted that 176 colleges are newly established. This status was presented to the Supreme Court bench.

Additionally, one medical college is closed and has no interns. Two postgraduate colleges currently have no interns, meaning stipend issues do not apply to them. Out of 562 colleges offering postgraduate courses, the NMC reported that most are paying stipends correctly.

Supreme Court Proceedings

Justices Aravind Kumar and P B Varale are presiding over the case. Advocate Charu Mathur has been appointed as nodal counsel. The court directed all involved parties to submit synopses and charts. This will help compile information for future court orders.

The next hearing is scheduled for August 24, 2024 . The court previously noted that a September 2023 order mandating a Rs. 25,000 monthly stipend for interns from October 2023 had not been fully implemented for a previous batch.
