What is the guiding principle of SHDF?

SHDF follows the principles of Sikhism and are dedicated to helping our community with some real issues.

How Did SHDF Start?

In 1999, six professionals from the Washington Metro area noticed that many smart but low-income students in Punjab were missing out on college education. Female students, in particular, were having a tough time because their families couldn't afford it. Driven by Sikh values and the idea of helping others, these six folks decided to create the Sikh Human Development Foundation. Their goal was to provide scholarships to kids in need. They set it up as a tax-exempt non-profit. By 2001, they were able to give out their first 22 scholarships to kids from families making less than the poverty line.
