BITS Pilani : Students outraged against the Fee Hike

BITS Pilani Fee structure has now been pushed up to 1,59,000 per semester, which is a matter of concern for all the students. Therefore, in order to show their disagreement and anger towards the same, the students have staged protests in the campus premises. The outage was extreme, which led around 3,000 students out on the campus for protests.

However, among all the accolades, the students are not happy with their own institute these days. The Administrator Body has recently announced a fee hike up to 15%. The students have been outraged by this decision.

The protest began on July 1st, 2018 and continued for some days, where on one hand the students were preparing for their examinations and on the other hand, a relentless effort through the protests. And, after several meetings with the authorities, the Chancellor agreed to meet the student body. But, shockingly, despite refraining the fee hike orders or providing an alternative for the same, some of the students' parents were sent emails asking them to refrain their wards from breeching the disciplinary acts of the Institute.

This was not all. The students were given a show-cause notice and instead of proving solutions to the promised assurances to put a halt on the current fee-hike, the college authorities reprised their “Private” status in an email, “calling the demand of ‘no fee hike' as out of question.”

However, when none of the procedures worked out, the students called in for a nationwide protest, and this information was passed through a Facebook Post. The student body of BITS from its three campuses, Goa, Pilani, and Hyderabad initiated this nationwide protest in major cities across the country.  The protests were supposed to be held in Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Aurangabad, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Indore, Lucknow, Bhopal, and Rourkela. The students asked the Chancellor KM Birla to intervene in the nationwide protests and extend some support.

Students gathered in front of Aditya Birla Group's Headquarters in Worli, Mumbai, while students in other states were preaching loud and silent protests. The students, in the beginning, instead of protesting, wrote letters to KM Birla in order to communicate their requests and he extended support to the students treating it as a major issue. But, every effort has gone in vain, because this Deemed to be University has reserved its right to take any decision regarding any issue.

The question of concern here is, is it right on the Institute's part to misuse its right in such a way? However, there has been no such positive result from this whole protest approach. Soon, the fee hike will probably be logged in the systems also.
