IGNOU, Delhi Overview

Indira Gandhi National Open University, popularly known as IGNOU, is one of the largest open universities in India. Established by the Indira Gandhi National Open University Act, 1985 (IGNOU Act 1985), the university is named after the first woman Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi. 

The university offers distance education to more than 3 million students in India and internationally through 21 schools, a network of 67 regional centers, and 29 foreign partner universities. In online and ODL formats, it offers over 226 short and long-term Academic Programs such as Certificates, Diplomas, UG Degrees, PG Degrees, and Doctoral Degrees. MBA, MCA, M.Com, MA (English), MTTM, MARD, and MSc DFSM are the most popular programs.

UNESCO has named IGNOU the world’s largest institute of higher learning. It has A++ accreditation from NAAC. It is comprised of 21 Schools of Studies, 67 Regional Centres, over 2667 Learner Support Centres, 810 faculty members, and 29 foreign institutes. The university provides almost 200 degrees, diplomas, certificates, and doctoral programs at low cost.

IGNOU Admission is done twice a year: January and July. All IGNOU courses at the UG and PG levels are selected based on merit in the qualifying test. Admission to B.Ed. and Doctoral programs is dependent on an entrance exam. NTA administers the university B.Ed Entrance Exam in two sessions at various locations.

Admissions are available in 161 courses and are based on merit in the qualifying examination as well as marks gained in admission exams. IGNOU New Delhi courses are available at four levels. These are the diploma, undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. The institution provides courses in full-time, distance, and online formats.

It has launched four new specializations in its MBA program, with an admission deadline of July 31, 2022. Human Resource Management, Marketing Management, Finance Management, and Operations Management are the new MBA Specializations.

IGNOU Admission 2024

IGNOU Admission takes place twice a year, in January and in July. Students can opt for admission in either of the months. Students can fill out the application form for UG and PG courses on the university's official website ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in. The application form must be submitted before the last date. Aspiring aspirants must provide all required documents along with an INR 250 application fee.

IGNOU Placements 2024

IGNOU Placement is decent and is conducted at its Baba Saheb Ambedkar Convention Center, IGNOU Maidan Garhi Campus. Since the establishment of the IGNOU Placement Cell in 2005, the university has successfully conducted placement drives and offered consideration placements to students onboard. Throughout the year, it holds numerous campus placement drives, job fairs, and skill-building activities at its headquarters, regional centers, study centers, and firm premises.

Reliance Life Insurance, Radical Minds Technologies, Aegon Life Insurance, Aegis Services Pvt. Ltd., Aviva India, and Quikr.Com are among the companies that have hired students from this Open University for positions such as Business Development Executive (BDE), Associate Executive Sales, Relationship Manager, and Sales, among others. Furthermore, the number of students shortlisted in placement drives increased by 15.33 percent between 2018 and 2019.

IGNOU Scholarships 2024

The university also provides financial help to students who fall into one of the reserved groups, namely Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. IGNOU Scholarships and fee Reimbursements are exclusively given to students who are financially disadvantaged or who are the parents of a single girl child. To apply for an IGNOU Scholarship, students must complete an application form on the official website.

Candidates from rural areas are eligible for a fee reduction of 50% with the provision of a domicile certificate. Fees for urban students living below the poverty level may be reduced by half. Furthermore, offenders residing and being tried in Indian prisons are excused from paying the program price, including the registration fee.

  • Self-Assessment by Students:  This particular assessment method is not based on marks but it is focused on aiding in student’s mental growth.
  • Assignments: The students are given certain assignments in the duration of the course and they are evaluated based on that. A total of 25 to 35 percent of marks are based on performance in assignments.
  • Term End Examination: This particular evaluation method has maximum weightage based on marks (70 to 75 percent) and evaluation is done on the marks scored in the final term examination.
