The establishment of Delhi Technological University, widely referred to as DTU, took place in the academic year of 1941. The university was established as Delhi Polytechnic and formerly known as Delhi College of Engineering. Delhi College of Engineering was previously affiliated to Delhi university and was later was converted into a state university named as Delhi Technological University. The institute was built with the help of Government of India. Delhi Technological University is being run under the government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

The university has also been approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. The main idea behind establishing the institute was to cater the needs on Indian industries with practical experience and theoretical knowledge.
