These include the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS), and Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS). This examination is highly competitive due to the prestige and responsibility associated with these roles.

The examination comprises three stages: Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and Personality Test (Interview). The Preliminary Examination screens candidates for the Main Examination. The Main Examination is a written test consisting of nine papers. It assesses candidates’ academic talent and ability to present knowledge clearly.

Key Stages of UPSC CSE 2025

Stage Approximate Dates
Preliminary Examination June 2025
Main Examination September 2025
Mains Result Declaration November 11, 2025
DAF-II Submission November 18 – December 2, 2025

Preparation for Interviews

Candidates preparing for the Personality Tests should focus on current affairs, general knowledge, and their chosen optional subjects. They should also practice articulating their thoughts clearly and concisely. Reviewing one’s Detailed Application Form-II (DAF-II) is crucial, as many questions often stem from the information provided there. Mock interviews can help refine communication skills and build confidence. The interview panel evaluates confidence, communication skills, leadership potential, and the ability to handle pressure. The final selection depends significantly on performance in this stage.

The UPSC aims to select officers capable of handling complex administrative roles across India. Success in the CSE offers a direct path to a career in public service, impacting governance and policy implementation.
