UGC Approves Direct Recruitment of PhD holders from top foreign universities as Assistant Professor in India

Candidates who have a PhD degree from any of the listed top 500 foreign Universities across the world are now eligible to apply for the post of Assistant professor in Indian Universities and get direct recruitment as per the latest announcement by University Grant Commission (UGC). In the new guidelines issued by UGC, the top 500 Universities put in this category will be selected from the four renowned and accepted world university ranking systems namely Times Higher Education Rankings, Quacquarelli Symonds and the Academic Ranking of World Universities of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Before this recruitment decision taken, to apply for the post of Assistant Professor Candidate must have a master's degree in the respective subject with an aggregate of 55 per cent marks in qualifying examination. Which is also the minimum UGC-NET eligibility, the exam candidate needs to take and qualify to be eligible for Assistant Professor.  Candidate depending on the subject being applied for taking either CSIR-NET or UGC NET also the test accredited by UGC like SET and SLET.

One of the senior officials from University Grant Commission (UGC) said that “The direct recruitment eligibility of international PhD holders is applicable for the disciplines of Arts, Commerce, Humanities, Education, Law, Social Sciences, Sciences, Languages, Library Science, Physical Education and Journalism and Mass Communication. This will help students learn from global talent in India itself."

Students from Indian Universities are also eligible to apply for the direct recruitment of Assistant Professor by scoring the required percentage in masters, for candidates applying from the foreign top universities no minimum required percentage in masters is not mandatory if they have a doctoral degree.

The official from UGC further added that "The direct recruitment eligibility only grants candidates an exemption from the written test but their performance in the interview will be a deciding factor for their appointment.”
