SSC CGL 2017: SC stays declaration of results

By: Sakshi Awasthi on Apr 22, 2023

The Supreme Court stayed the declaration of SSC CGL 2017 Results, saying it appeared from the first look that the entire test was tainted. The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is a government body which is responsible for conducting Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination for recruitment to lower categories of posts in the central government. The first phase of the SSC CGL 2017 examination was conducted on August 5, 2017, followed by the second phase of examination between February 17 and February 22, 2018.

The decision was taken by a bench of Justice S A Bobde and L Nageswara after perusing a status report of CBI and due to this report, several SSC officials were also criticized. The Supreme Court said, “it can't permit people benefitting from SSC examination scam to get into service.” The bench further said, “It prima facie appears that the entire SSC system is tainted and entire examinations (2017) are tainted. It can't be believed that the custodian of the examination paper is himself leaking the paper.”

Earlier, there was a huge protest by students against the alleged leak of Combined Graduate Level examination because of which government ordered CBI probe in the matter.

The court also mentioned Additional Solicitor General Vikramjit Banerjee who is appearing for CBI, for defending the officials of Staff Selection Commission. The bench said, “Mr. Solicitor, it is surprising that you are taking this stand. You are appearing for CBI and you should have said that the examination must be canceled. Your status report implicates several people and you are taking a different stand.”

Last year, nearly 30 lakh candidates applied for the examination. SSC CGL examination is conducted in four-tiers, out of which Tier I and Tier II are computer-based whereas, the remaining two i.e. Tier III and Tier IV are descriptive. SSC CGL 2018 examination has also been delayed by the commission and no further schedule has been released yet. The tier I examination was scheduled in the month of August according to the previous notification.
