NEET 2018: CBSE might move to Supreme Court

By: Sakshi Awasthi on July 12, 2018

Earlier this week the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has directed the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to grant 196 marks to all the candidates who took the NEET 2018 examination in Tamil. The decision was taken in favor of the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by CPM Leader T K Rangarajan against the errors in Tamil version of NEET 2018 question paper. The minister claimed that the keywords were wrongly translated from English in Tamil questions.

The CBSE might move to the Supreme Court to challenge the order of Madras High Court of granting additional 196 marks to candidates who took the examination in Tamil. The board is waiting for the directions from HRD Ministry. According to the sources, the CBSE is taking legal advice on the issue and might move to the apex court on Friday. The HRD Ministry is also seeking the opinion from the Health Ministry due to its involvement in NEET counselling and allotment of seats. The High Court has also directed to postpone the counselling process until a revised rank list is released by the board within a period of two weeks.

Despite the Court order, the Medical Council of India (MCI) has decided to continue the counselling process. The Council specified that the Court order has not been issued to the government agencies under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

According to a senior health ministry official, “The academic session in medical colleges will get delayed if we delay the process of counselling.”

This year nearly 6.5 Lakh candidates qualified National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) which was conducted on May 6, 2018. The Court order will benefit nearly 24 thousand candidates who took the examination in Tamil. The students are apprehensive about their future and waiting for the Board's next move.
