NEET 2019 Might be Conducted by NTA

By: Sakshi Awasthi on June 14, 2018

According to a response to an RTI by the Ministry of Human Resource Development's Department of Higher Education, the responsibilities of conducting few higher education entrance examinations will be shifted from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to the newly formed National Testing Agency (NTA).

The National Testing Agency was set up in the year 2017 by the Union Cabinet to conduct examinations which are currently organized and managed by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). NTA is an autonomous and self-sustained premier testing organization, established to conduct all entrance examination for Higher Education Institutions of India.

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test is currently conducted by the CBSE for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate level. The NEET Examination is conducted to provide admission to MBBS and BDS programmes offered by numerous medical and dental institutions of India.

NEET examination replaced the AIPMT and the other state-level PMT examinations in the year 2013. The first NEET examination was held on May 5, 2013. Nearly2 Lakh candidates appeared for NEET in 2013, whereas, the figure has increased to 13 Lakh in the year 2018.

There are speculations that the exam will be conducted twice a year and will be held in online mode only. However, for the current year, more candidates appeared for paper-pen mode (offline mode) as compared to the Computer-based test mode (online mode).

According to Kundan Nath, Under Secretary & Central Public Information Officer of the Technical Education Bureau reply to an RTI on April 10, “In pursuance of the Budget Announcement 2017-18, the Union Cabinet in its meeting held on 10.11.2017 approved creation of National Testing Agency as an autonomous and self-sustained premier testing organization to conduct all entrance examinations for higher education institutions. The NTA would initially conduct those entrance examinations which are currently being conducted by the CBSE. It is envisaged that NTA will conduct the exams from 2019 onwards. Other examinations will be taken up gradually after NTA is fully geared up. The entrance examinations will be conducted in online mode at least twice a year. Detailed modalities for the conduct of these examinations will be decided by NTA is due course.”
