The time when all the students aspiring to seek admissions in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are busy in Online Registration procedure of JEE Advanced, some students have been protesting in Mumbai demanding for a change in rules for the candidates with Learning Disability (LD).

The protesting candidates have accentuated that JEE Advanced brochure has mentioned only Dyslexia as a Learning Disability, whereas Dyscalculia and Dysgraphia have not been included. Many students claimed that the documents required for registration by the examination authority are different from the documents available with the LD candidates of Maharashtra.
The parent of one of the protesting students said, “According to the information brochure, students with dyslexia need to submit a certificate to be obtained by a Dyslexia Association. However, in Maharashtra, the rule has always been that such certificates can only be obtained from Government Hospitals, which is what we have done. We are not sure if the same will be accepted.”
There had been numerous queries at the JEE Advanced Helpline Number, seeking the clarity on the issue.
Learning Disability is a subcategory which comes under PwD category and the candidates of this category are required to fill a separate examination form. According to the norms mentioned for PwD Category candidates registering inJEE Advanced, the candidate must come under ‘severe' category, which has been questioned by various experts.
According to the experts and psychiatrists, there is no method to quantify LD. Either a person is a patient of LD or not but there is no standard method to approve the severity. The demand for the certificate from a Dyslexia Association is also opposed, as all these associations are privately owned.
However, a senior official from JEE Advanced stated that the candidates must not worry about the issue as all the top 2.31 Lakh candidates who qualified JEE Main examination are automatically eligible for JEE Advanced 2018.
The JEE Advanced 2018 Examination is scheduled to be conducted on May 20, 2018. The Online registration for the exam is currently open until May 7, 2018.
