JEE Advanced 2019: The number of applicants increased this year after deceleration of JEE Main Result

By: Archana on April 30, 2019

As soon as JEE Main 2019 Result is out, lakhs of engineering aspirants across nation is wondering if they able to make it to JEE Advanced 2019 which will open their gateway for admission in IITs. The admission authority of Indian Institute of Technology has addressed the concern and decided to increase the number of eligible applicants for upcoming examination.

Candidates qualifying JEE Main with top 2.45 rank in all categories are eligible to apply for the JEE Advanced 2019 which is scheduled to be conducted on May 27. However, the number of eligible candidates may increase once the rank list is out.

By increasing the number of eligible applicants in JEE Advanced authorities believe that it will help with bringing down the total number of vacant seats in IITs every year.

The official statement released by the authorities reads that- “the top 2.45 lakh candidates including all categories, who clear the JEE Mains exams will be eligible to register for the JEE Advanced exam, to be held on May 27 this year. The total number of eligible candidates could be slightly higher this year than 2.45 lakh in case of tied ranks or scores in any category.” The number slightly increased from last year's 2.31 lakh applicants of JEE-Adv exam and there is further speculation of increase in the number.

According to the recent data released by Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD), last year 118 seats remained vacant in 23 IITs and ISM. Even in the year 2017 the number of vacant seats were 121, which if we correlate the data, is increasing every year. The vacant seats were 96 and 50 in the year 2016 and 2015 respectively. The conditions were much better in 2014 when only 3 seats remain vacant.

The total number of seats, including the increased ones in all IITs will be revealed soon by the admission authorities as stated in the admission website.

One of the major reason for the increase in the number of applicants this year is introducing the seats for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and a total of 9, 800 candidates belonging to EWS category will appear for the exam this year. 1.13 lakh of total applicants belongs to the general and open category followed by 66, 150 belonging to other backward castes (OBC); 36,750 to the scheduled caste (SC) and 18,375 to the scheduled tribe (ST) category.
