JEE Advanced 2019: More than 30% eligible candidates are not applying

By: Archana on Apr 22, 2023

This year the aspirants of JEE Advanced 2019 are experiencing a lot of changes like rescheduling of the exam date, extension of registration window, increased number of eligible candidates and others. Talking about some major changes one of the most shocking is the decreased number of applications received this year for the examination.

This year, a lot of students decided to skip the examination even being completely eligible for it. Till last date of registration (excluding Odisha) the total number of expecting applications were short by 72,000.

May 9, 2019 was the last date to apply for JEE Advanced and out of 2.45 lakh eligible candidates only 1.73 lakh candidates completed the JEE Advanced Application Procedure. Although this number doesn’t include the number of applications received from Odisha as the Ministry of Human Resource Development extended the last date for registration to 14 May in the state, the difference is a lot.

IIT Roorkee which is conducting the examination this year on behalf of all the IITs and ISM, was expecting an increased number of applications this year after including seats for candidates applying under EWS category. The number of seats were increased to 2.45 lakh and applications received till now is only 1.73 lakh.

One can see the below data of last few years, where there is a clear trend of decrease in the number of test takers every year.

Year

Number of Eligible Candidates (in lakh)

Number of  Registered Candidates (in lakh)

2019

2.45

1.73 (Excluding Odisha)

2018

2.31

1.65

2017

2.21

1.72

2016

1.98

1.56

What can be a possible reason for this drop in the applicants even being eligible for the exam which will open the gateway of one of the premier institute of the country? It the difficulty level of the examination or is it the less number of seats available in the IITs? One of the expert thinks that the examination is getting tougher with every passing years and the candidates don’t feel confident enough to crack the examination can be one of the influencing factor.  While the other thinks that the candidates are afraid to attempt the examination because of the very less number of seats available, instead of getting a lower rank and getting into a unwanted course and IIT its better to take the desired course in any of the NITs with their JEE Main score.
