As per the intervention and guidelines set by The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry, In the year 2018 witnessed an increased number of girls being enrolled in 23 IITs spread across India.

Even after performing notably good in examinations of Higher Secondary (10+2) the girls applying and getting enrolled in top most engineering colleges were extremely low. Out of 10 admissions in any of the IIT only 1 is a girl, to improve this ratio difference HRD Ministry directed all IITs to introduce “Supernumerary Seats” and target at least 14% of girls being enrolled in all 23 IITs. “Analyzing the previous year's admission records, only 10 % of students were the girl and to reach the target of 14% in the year 2018 it was needed to add the minimum of 550 Seats,” said Mr. Aditya Mittal, chairman of the Joint Entrance Examination-Advanced(JEE Advanced) at IIT Delhi.
Last year the woman percentage in some of the IITs were even less than 6.3%, there is a representation table to clear the Idea of how the earlier scenario of different sex enrolment in these desired engineering colleges was:

Following the directions and criteria given by Government, most of the IITs were capable of achieving the marks of 14% and in 2018 more and more girls were admitted in the all 23 IITs. For instance IIT Delhi this year got 143 girl students in comparison to just 93 in the year 2017. IIT Bombay jumped to 15.4 percent enrolment mark (more than set goal of 14%) which in the last year was just 10.7%. Not just Delhi and Bombay but Madras, Bhubaneswar and Roorkee also achieved the target of enrolling more girl students.

The government of India is targeting to achieve at least 20% of woman enrolment by the year 2020 and add more supernumerary seats if needed, however increasing the seats doesn't mean that there will be a cut down in the seats for male candidates, but to increase the strength of woman candidates.
