IIT Madras Is The Top Engineering Institute As Per The List of HRD Ministry's NIRF Ranking 2020

As per the Human Resource Development Ministry's National Institutional Ranking Framework, shortened as NIRF, announced on 11th June 2020, the Indian Institute of Madras (IIT Madras), Indian Institute of Delhi (IIT Delhi), and Indian Institute of Science Bangalore (IISc Bangalore) grabbed the first three positions amongst various other educational institutions across the country. The main objective of NIRF Ranking is to outline a methodology which is used to rank educational institutions in the country. There are various parameters for ranking based on which several institutions and universities are ranked.

NIRF Annual Rankings are usually announced in the month of April, but the announcement got delayed due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic across the country.  

These 5 parameters broadly include:

  • Teaching, Learning, and Resources
  • Research and Professional Practices
  • Graduation Outcomes
  • Outreach and Inclusivity
  • Perception

The institutes are assigned ranks based on the total sum of marks obtained by the, for each of the above mentioned five parameters.

JEE Main 2020

The higher education institutes in the Top 10 category are seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). According to the annual rankings, IISc Bangalore, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Banaras Hindu University made to the top three positions in the list. Another institute of national importance which is, IIM Ahmedabad, has been ranked as the Top B-School and is followed by IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta.

While talking about the colleges of Delhi University, the Union Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank' made an announcement that Miranda House bagged the first rank amongst colleges of Delhi University which is followed Lady Sri Ram College for Women, St. Stephen's College, and Hindu College.

As per the new rankings of NIRF, the list of top three engineering colleges in the country are:

  • IIT Madras
  • IIT Delhi
  • IIT Bombay

Admission to IITs is based on candidates' performance in JEE Advance Exam. Candidates who qualify JEE Main Exam and sit through and qualify JEE Advance would be considered eligible for admission to the programs offered by the Indian Institutes of Technology.

While talking about the pharmacy colleges that made to the list of NIRF Ranking, the top ranked institutes are Jamia Hamdard (Delhi), which is followed by Punjab University (Chandigarh). The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research (Mohali) managed to grab third position in the list.

In the category of medical colleges, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (New Delhi) stood first and was followed by PGI Chandigarh, and CMC Vellore.

The HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank' says:

“These rankings act as a guide to students for selection of universities based on a set criterion and helps universities to improve their performance on various ranking parameters and identify gaps in research and areas of improvement. This exercise has also created a habit of organizing data by the institutions and most of all these institutions attempt themselves to become more competitive.”

It was the first time when the Dental colleges in the country were considered for ranking by NIRF. The top three colleges in the dental category were Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, and DY Patil Vidyapeeth.

There were total 3771 universities along with higher educational institutions across the country which participated in this procedure of NIRF Ranking 2020.
