IIT council to discuss on centralizing Ph.D. and M.Tech admissionâ€™s counselling for IITs and IISc.

On 21^st of August 2018 IIT council is going to conduct a discussion session on the proposal of, whether the IITs and IISc should centralize counselling and admission process for M.Tech and PhD programmes like the counselling process being conducted for undergraduate programmes or not. A panel has set up specifically to discuss the highlights and challenges of the proposal for admission through counselling of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and to align it with present counselling process of JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) advanced in IITs and IISc, Bangalore.

At present admissions in the Postgraduate course in any of the nationally claimed top institutes is done on the basis of scores obtained in GATE, which is being conducted by IITs and IISc in alternate spins. After the declaration of the score students has to apply in respective colleges individually for the next round of test or interview to finally get admission in any of the colleges. There are instances when interview dates for two colleges collided and candidate have to opt for one leaving the chance of taking admission in the other. Realizing the trouble faced by a candidate to take admission in the desired college and course a centralized admission procedure has been suggested similar to that of what is being followed for admission in undergraduate level, this will help the students with the money and time spent travelling from one college to other also as the process will be centralized and open, no deserving candidate with required ranks in GATE will be deprived of admissions.

Apart from discussing the importance and needs of a centralized admission and counselling procedure the panel of the council will also present their views on the proposal of setting up a Centre for Rural Development and Technology (CRDT) at all IITs across the nation. A senior a senior MHRD official said that “Enhancing agricultural output and maximum possible value addition to the agricultural output along with other allied earning opportunities in villages should be the primary focus in the context of rural development. Data on rural market potential shows that a population of about 250 million in rural areas exhibits a high level of market potential."

Also as the council is feeling an increased need of a committee, which can suggest measures for reforms of the JEE Advanced, so this will also be a big part of the discussion in the council meeting of 21^st August.

Another important agenda of the council meeting will be to set up a committee of experts from the institutes and outside which can regulate and suggest the steps of planning and recruitment in relevance to the admission and academic schedule of IITs. The proposal for the meeting agenda quotes that "quite a few candidates, after being admitted in IITs or other institutes, are picked up by some of the PSUs for placement based on their GATE scores. As a result, they desert their course and the seat remains vacant.“
