The candidates pursuing technical courses for the year 2019-2020 might have to write GATE examination as a mandatory ‘Exit Exam'. According to a resolution passed by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, known as GATE will be mandatory for engineering graduates in all the technical institutes across the country.

The resolution has been passed in a recent AICTE meeting in New Delhi. The decision has been taken due to an increase in the number of unemployed engineers after graduation. According to an AICTE official, the degree certificate will be awarded to only those candidates who qualify the examination. The remaining candidates would be required to re-appear for the examination to obtain the engineering degree.
The AICTE official mentioned, “The degree certificate will be awarded to students only after they clear the exit examination.” Every year nearly 7 lakh candidates graduate from nearly 3,000 engineering institutes across the country. However, there had been mixed reactions from the faculty members but the student community is not much convinced with the decision.
The AICTE has not cleared whether the examination will be conducted by AICTE on the national level or by the state universities and institutes.
Reactions:
Dr. Manjunath B, Principal of New Horizon College of Engineering said, “It depends on individual skill and instead of conducting an exit exam, its better for colleges to conduct an aptitude test, a technology test or communication skills test at least each semester.”
“This is really a good move and I hope this will increase the chances of engineering graduates getting employment,” said the principal of a private engineering college in Bangalore.
Himanshu Gupta, an engineering student said, “Its already difficult to get good marks in examinations and now qualifying one more examination might add further complications.”
