GATE 2018 was conducted on February 3, 2018, in two slots and similar to the previous year, Mechanical Engineering was one of the major disciplines. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering consisted of questions on technical concepts, Engineering and General Aptitude that required to be completed within a total time limit of 180 minutes.
A higher proportion of questions from the numerical questions had appeared in the Mechanical Engineering stream, there were also more of Numerical Answer Type Questions in comparison to the previous year. These factors have made the examination slightly tricky to attempt, owing to the fact that there were a lesser number of direct theoretical questions and Multiple Choice Questions, which are easier in an attempt in comparison to the Fill in the Blanks question.
The Exam interface and environment of GATE 2018 were the same as of the previous year. With the virtual calculator built in the website, students having a slight practice of the calculator were at a better advantage.
Analysis of Examination
Forenoon: The paper was based on Understanding of Concepts and involved pure logical reasoning, being less formula based. Manufacturing Technology had a weight of about 13-14% which is lesser in comparison to the previous year. The questions that were related to Thermal Engineering and Heat were lesser in number, had the same weight in comparison to the previous year. This also required conceptual understanding to understand them better.
Questions from Vibration, TOM, SOM and Machine Design were more in number and were questions that were mostly time-consuming.The level of questions in Engineering Maths and Aptitude seemed easy as the questions were less in number and could be answered in a brief time period. The number of questions in the NAT Section were more in comparison to the Multiple Choice Questions.
Afternoon: The number of NAT Questions had been more than the Multiple Choice Questions and had a significant weight as well. Manufacturing Technology had one of the highest weights and a lot of questions were lengthy. One mark questions had been mostly easy and a very few of them were of medium level in terms of difficulty level. The paper, involved more of logical analysis and reasoning, extending more than understanding of concepts.
GATE Examination was held on 3rd and 4th of February 2018. The examination on Saturday was held for ME, EY,PE, XE and XL in the morning session. The afternoon session was held for ME, AE, MA and PI. On 4th February 2018, the GATE Examination was held for AG, AR, BT, CY, GG, CH, IN, MT, PH, TF apart from CS and MN.
The GATE Examination would further be held on February 10 and 11, 2018.
